The Other Side of the Coin

Back on August 8 my post Count On One Hand articulated the five most compelling reasons to consider virtualizing your data infrastructure. Because I emphatically believe that virtualization and cloud computing are two sides of the same coin I thought it fair that I bring to your attention, via Carrie Schmelkin, TMC Web Editor, the Top Five Reasons to turn to Cloud Hosting.
And so, without further ado…
$ OPEX. In a time characterized by conservative spending and frugal mindsets, the cloud is one of the most cost effective forms of technology out there. When it comes to the cloud, OPEX costs are slashed because consumers pay for what they use and costs are directly proportional to requirements. Moreover, there are no upfront costs, licensing agreements or long-term contract obligations when it comes to cloud hosting. The bottom line is that when you know how much you are using and how much that usage will cost, you can have much greater control over your expenditures.
$$ Greater Scalability. With cloud computing, say goodbye to frets that surface when you face peak periods and have to provision new services, as cloud computing allows consumers to enjoy greater scalability and agility. For those companies plagued by equipment underutilization and misappropriated hardware, the cloud addresses those problems as it enables storage, compute and RAM resources to be more efficiently managed, provisioned and shared.
$$$. Faster Deployment. The time needed to deploy a new application drops significantly with cloud computing as servers can be brought up and destroyed in a matter of minutes. The cloud replaces the need for tedious installations and new hardware servers. Specifically, just as it takes seconds to create an email account, all one needs to deploy cloud technology and new applications is a computer and the Internet. No software downloads are necessary.
$$$$. Lower Maintenance Costs. Because the cloud does not require expensive hardware and a shared IT staff, cloud users can enjoy lower maintenance costs. Instead of purchasing the equipment or buying the software outright, the cloud stores these tools remotely, offers applications that are free to use and allows you to subscribe to the software and pay as you need it. Moreover, say goodbye to server, storage and virtualization full-time staffers as outsourced clouds take the place of those employees.
$$$$$. Stellar Disaster Recovery. The cloud takes a different approach to traditional disaster recovery by encapsulating the entire server, including the operating system, applications, patches and data, into a single software bundle or virtual server. This entire virtual server can be copied or backed up to an off-site data center and spun up on a virtual host in a matter of minutes, according to industry experts. By deploying cloud technology, it is expected that multiple copies of data sets will be created and kept in sync, guaranteeing the utmost disaster recovery.
Bolt these two posts together and the only conclusion possible is that when you come right down to it, cloud computing and server virtualization are —pardon the pun — “hands down” the one-two punch your business needs to ensure optimum uptime, superb business continuity and disaster recovery and exceptional, uninterrupted delivery of services.
Did I mention all of that was available from Venyu? Consider I just did.
