Have you connected remote offices over a wide area network and experienced poor performance? You may want to look into WAN acceleration.
Here are a few of the techniques used by this technology:
De-Duplication : A WAN accelerator analyzes data that is being sent over the wire and will try to de-duplicate the data. Whenever duplicate data is requested across a WAN, instead of sending the full file or part of the file, a pointer to a local cached copy of the file gets sent. This substantially reduces the amount of traffic being sent across the wire and improves response times tremendously.
Compression: WAN accelerators can leverage various forms of compression algorithms to reduce the actual amount of data being sent across your WAN links. Typical spreadsheets and documents can yield 2-5x compression ratios. Pre-compressed content, such as zip files, images, and audio, will receive little, if any, compression at all.
TCP Acceleration: One of the major issues surrounding long distance WAN links is latency. Due to the design of the TCP protocol, latency across a WAN link will seriously reduce your application performance and file transfer speeds. By optimizing and implementing factors such as window scaling, bandwidth delay product, and congestion notification, WAN accelerators can increase your response times across the wire.
Check with your favorite vendors to get more information on their WAN acceleration products. Your users will be glad you did.
